Records Smashed in 2002

This year has been by far the most successful year ever for charitable donations in the Club’s short history with nearly £5,000 being raised for various charities. The focus was on the Captain’s Charity with Steve Clark nominating the Downs Syndrome Association. Also though, significant sums were raised for the British Kidney Patients Association by Pauline Stacey, our Ladies Captain and Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) by Dale Loughran the Club Vice Captain. These donations were handed over to representatives from the charities on our Presentation Night, 26th October 2002.

First of all, Catherine Stacey, who works in the Kidney Unit at Southmead hospital, picked up a cheque for £1.147.65 from Pauline, her mother and Ladies Captain, on behalf of the British Kidney Patients Association.

Catherine thanked Stockwood for their generosity and spoke enthusiastically for some 5 minutes about how the money would be used and the good the Association does for people suffering from kidney problems.

Steve Clark then announced that Mike Golder, the Captain of our Avalon League ‘A’ Team, had raised £233, which he had already passed on to his chosen charity, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA). The money came from fines levied on the Stockwood players for poor performances, pitiable dress sense or some other incident that gave an opportunity for a laugh. These matches are always followed by a meal after which both Team Captains give a short speech. These speeches normally cover the same areas; good weather, good greens, good food, good playing companions and how a good time was had by all. And so a fitting opportunity to introduce some humour into proceedings and raise some money for charity at the same time is to levy some fines. Before the match, Mike secretly appoints one of his players as the ‘Fine Fellow’ who is then responsible for gathering the dirt on his fellow team members and dishing the dirt and fines during the speeches. A fine is usually £1 and no-one gets fined more than £2 at any match so everyone goes away happy. Often in the past, team captains have put all the fines towards an end of season team meal or the like, so well done to Mike Golder for using the money in this way.

Steve Clark then asked Dale Loughran, his Vice Captain to talk about the Charity Golfathon which he had organised earlier in the season. Dale’s target was £2,000 which he comfortably exceeded as altogether he raised £2,566,98. Dale has shared this money equally between the Captain’s Charity and CRY which stands for Cardiac Risk in the Young. Mrs Shapcott from CRY received the cheque for £1,298.49 from Dale and Steve and described what the Charity does.

Briefly it funds the purchase of cardiac monitoring equipment, takes this equipment to schools and conducts tests on all the children. Many seemingly healthy children die each year from previously undiagnosed cardiac related problems and this screening program has resulted in many lives being saved by picking up early on heart conditions.

Last but not least we came to the Captain’s Charity. Receiving the cheque from Steve Clark on behalf of the Downs Syndrome Association was Jane Yeomans who looks after the Bath & North East Somerset area.

In thanking Steve and Stockwood for the £2,057.89 donation, Jane spoke movingly for over 5 minutes on the work done by the Charity. All the officers are volunteers so all the money raised will go directly to helping the people with Downs. The types of activities the Association runs include education, music therapy, outings to local attractions, and a toy library. Also there is a young adult group for 15 to 25 year-olds which helps with confidence, social skills and independence, and a social group for the brothers and sisters of children with Downs that gives them an opportunity to discuss in confidence their worries and fears.

So well done to Stockwood and its generous members in 2002. Surely Dale can equal or exceed these excellent totals in 2003…
