At 6.30am on Saturday 23rd August 2003 twelve intrepid golfers from Stockwood Vale congregated on the first tee to take part in the SVGC Golfathon 2003 in aid of the Bristol Branch of the Downs Awareness Society.
Teams of three played three rounds of competition golf as a Bowmaker, Texas Scramble and Ransomes. As the day went on and the heat of the sun intensified much water was consummed to counteract dehydration. Also showers and changes of clothes between rounds were readily taken.
As the last team finished their 54th hole of the day at 8.00pm, Club Captain Brian Clutterbuck, welcomed all competitors back to the club house with the offer of a well deserved glass of refreshment.
The amount raised for the Captain’s Charity is still being collated but should be in the order of £1,000 - £1,200.
The golfers who took part were Rich Gill, Steve Smith, Ian Lewis, Russ Fry, Jeff Fry, Nick Hoare, Lee Jennings, Adrian Bovey, Dave Finnemore, John Tantram, Mike Golder and Mike Newell.
