2006 AGM Notes by John Gray

The following are my notes taken during the meeting (Fri 17th November 2006) so apologies in advance if there are any errors ...

Ladies & Seniors Captains Reports

The Ladies team lost more matches than they won this year (Won 5, Halved 3, Lost 15) but Viv Ellis did win the Alliance Scratch Foursomes.
The Seniors had a successful season winning 21 of their 31 matches. Their competitions were also particularly well supported. The new Seniors Captain was presented - Paul Bishop

Team Captain's Report

Chris Hughes, Captain of the Bristol & District Team gave a brief report on behalf of all the Team Captains. The B&D team, in spite of winning 4 matches were ultimately relegated to Division 8. This is the first time in the history of the league that a team with so many wins had been relegated. On the bright side though there are some good youngsters coming through. So along with Shortwood Lodge who were also relegated from Division 7, it is likely that the teams in Division 8 in 2007 will be Long Ashton, The Kendleshire, The Bristol and Weston-S-Mare.
Both the Avalon A and B teams just missed promotion. All league tables can be seen on the Teams page.

Club Captain's Report

John Glanville undertook his last responsibility in his year in office thanking the normal array of people and announcing 2 things - a cheque for £6,000 was presented to the Downs Syndrome Society which was his charity for the years and he thanked members for their support; finally he welcomed Clive Wright as the new Club Captain and Clive & John swapped chairs! Clive continued with his own array of thanks including of course John for a very successful Captain's year. Clive also had 2 announcements - his Captain's Charity for 2007 will be the Alzheimers Society (due to personal experience of the condition in his family) and his new Vice Captain is Colin Perrett. Clive said the Team Captains will remain the same for 2007 and that there is a possibility we may enter a 3rd team in the Avalon League in 2008.

Director's Report

Mike Ramsay gave his usual well-received report. He said that as the years go by and the course has improved it becomes more and more difficult to make changes/improvements that will have a big impact. He said that loads of trees have been planted over the last couple of years which are maturing well. 2 new tees have been constructed on both the 4th and 2nd and another is planned for the 17th. The 5th, 6th and 14th tees will be the only ones using mats in the winter by 2008. Improvements will be made over the winter to all paths to reduce wear and tear on members' trolleys. Electric Golf Carts will be in place for April 2007. He is looking at options for lengthening the course and plans to re-build the putting green. Questions from the floor were lively with the majority of the debate concerning whether the couse should start at the existing 1st or the existing 16th tee. This issue has come up again this year as there have been big queues on the 2nd tee particularly on medal days. The counter argument is that to start on the 16th is not helpful for staff who have to control the 1st tee. There was no resolution to this issue at the meeting.

Election of Officers for 2007

The new Committee was elected at the meeting and can be seen on the 2007 Committee page.
