Special Report by John Gray
A good friend of Stockwood passed away on Tuesday 26th June 2007.
Roy Maggs was well known to many of our members as when he was Club Captain of our neighbours, Knowle Golf Club in 1997, he approached me, the Stockwood Club Captain at the time, and together we founded the Maggs/Gray Challenge which was an annual match between the two clubs. At first just one match each year, the Challenge has now evolved into an annual Home & Away tie where the combined matchplay totals decide the winner of the Gray/Maggs trophy.
Roy, apart from being 'the life and soul of the party', was also a man of vision, straight-talking and one who was not afraid of taking risks. At the time, Stockwood was just a 'pay & play' 9 hole course (the 2nd 9 holes were still a year away from completion) and Knowle was and is one of the most prestigious Gloucestershire golf clubs, having celebrated their centenary a couple of years ago. Roy said to me a few years ago, "Stockwood is our closest neighbour so it would have been foolish not to form a relationship." To Roy, it was as simple as that but at Stockwood we all recognised this as a grand and significant gesture.
A number of Stockwood members attended Roy's funeral at Westerleigh Crematorium on Friday 6th July including myself, Clive Wright our current Captain, John Glanville our 2006 Captain and Mike Newell a past Captain and regular member of the Stockwood team in this match. We were just a few of the some 300 Knowle members, family and friends who turned up to pay their respects. We'll remember you Roy !
