Stockwood Vale Golf Club

Bristol

Winter rules have gone and summer is upon us, although as I write this it’s tipping down and has been for most of the week.

The new year has seen the introduction of buggies with GPS facilities. These have proved to be very popular if the empty buggy park is anything to go by. Already some improvements have been made to the buggy paths with more to follow. Personally I’d happily pay for a taxi service from the 13th green to the 14th tee!

One anecdote has already come from the buggies. Two members were making their way up the 15th. One jumps out of the buggy and prepares to play his 2nd shot to the green.  He turns to his partner and asks “How far am I from the pin?”

His partner consults the GPS screen and replies “740 yards”. “Don’t be stupid” says the 1st player, “it can’t be that far”

“That’s what the GPS says, if you don’t believe me come and see for yourself” he’s told. So the player makes his way back to the buggy and sure enough it is saying 740 yards to the pin. But then he turns to his partner and says, “You stupid bugger, you’ve got it set for the 16th!”

Do you know the rules ?

Just for fun, do you know the answer to the following?:

Colin and Clive are playing in a medal and are making their way up the 15t.h towards the clubhouse. Somehow Clive has got his ball on the green in 3. He putts and as his ball nears the hole a large leaf settles on his line of putt. He runs (well, moves quickly) and just manages to remove the leaf before his ball passes by and goes into the hole. Clive has scored 4.

TRUE or FALSE?

WHAT’S ON?

We’ve already had the first of the summer medals and, by the time you’ve read this, a club stableford. Don’t forget - on May 26th there is the 2nd of the summer medals.

Results and club handicaps can be viewed on www.howdidido.co.uk .

The  first  weekend  in  June  means  Clive  Wright’s

CAPTAIN’S CHARITY WEEKEND.

This starts on Friday 1st June with a dance in the evening to live music. On the Saturday there is a Bowmaker competition and in the evening a tabletop magician will amuse members and guests. The weekend culminates on Sunday 3rd with a fun day.

Another event later in the month on Saturday 16th is the

 CAPTAIN’S INVITATION DAY.

This takes the form of a pairs’ stableford competition. Teams are made up of one member plus a guest who is a member of another club and has a maximum handicap of 24.

Clive Wright would also be grateful to hear from anybody who would kindly donate a raffle prize or two for either or both events.

Please support these events and in so doing help both the Alzheimer’s and Downs Syndrome charities.

More details are available on the notice boards or behind the bar.

JOHN GAST

MEMORIAL CLOCK AND PLAQUE

John Gast was one of the club’s founder members and was twice Senior’s Captain (98,99). John was an active Club Committee member and as an ex union man John was always insistent on the strict implementation of the Club Constitution and Rules. John was a great supporter of all Club activities. Although a senior, John was also a regular in Men’s and Mixed competitions and was well known by many of the Club’s members.

John was the regular starter for the Seniors Open and always insisted that the clock in the bar was placed on the first tee for him to keep players on time.  The clock that now looks over the 1st tee is an apt and long lasting tribute.

The clock and plaque were unveiled on Sunday morning, 13th May 2007. John's family and several club members attended despite the wet weather.

.Seniors OPen –15TH May

This was the seventh Seniors Open to be held and we had a record number of visitors 63 in total together with 50 Stockwood Seniors making a field of 113, we had early rain but as the day progressed we had some fine weather, the course was in magnificent condition and we received many favourable comments from our visitors.

The overall Winner and Seniors Open Champion for 2007 was a home grown player, Colin Perrett. His score in Division One (1-18) was 44 stableford points (22 out and 22 in), a remarkable effort seeing Colin was in one of the first groupings and had to encounter the early rain. Congratulations to Colin from all the Stockwood Seniors. As he is Vice Captain and Competition Secretary of the main club he will now be playing off 16 as a result of his latest conquest. (I can hear the cheering already ! )

One other remarkable achievement was by a past Seniors Captain Bob Winter who recorded a HOLE IN ONE on the 154yard par 3 6th hole and received a bottle of champagne for his fine effort. (thanks for the whisky on the bar Bob ! ).
