Bob Cook resigns from the Senior Committee

Bob has resigned from the committee, for personal reasons he was no longer able to devote the time to meetings etc. and felt it best to resign in fairness to his fellow committee members. I would like to thank Bob on behalf of the membership for the contributions he has made especially over the two years he acted as both the Vice Captain and Captain of the Senior section. On a personal note I would like to thank Bob for the support he gave me over the last year and a half as the Vice Captain and now Captain and can now appreciate how hard you have to work at times in trying to ensure the smooth running of all the matches and competitions throughout the year. Thanks Bob

The greens were very fast but receptive.

A well struck shot on the 12th went arrow-straight towards the pin and disappeared from view during the Seniors Stableford competition on Wednesday 6th Jan 2017. As Tony was in the last group out, most Seniors had left, so there may still be some of Scotland’s finest left for a celebratory tipple for other members!

 28/29 June 2017
This year’s Senior championship was a well contested event with over 60 competitors.
Unfortunately the first day was marred by persistent rain but at least the wind had died down. The cut was made at 90 and for the second day the weather was far more favourable. The course was in immaculate condition throughout thanks to Steve Frankcomb and his team. After the first day it was long standing member and ex club captain Steve Ogden with a great score of 79 followed closely by another ex-captain John Gray with 81. Martin Walters, Brian Clutterbuck and Pete Mumford were only a couple of shots behind and ready to pounce. The cut after the first day was set at 90 leaving the top 16 to fight it out. Steve Ogden could not repeat his efforts of the first day and hit an 86. John Gray on the other hand improved his previous day’s score by one shot and won the championship by 4 shots. A special mention to Alan Gregg who won the best net score of 140 for the two rounds.

Seniors subsidised away day, only £10 each to include coffee/bacon roll upon arrival and a round of golf.
After recent heavy rain, it was a lovely Spring day – probably the best day of the year so far.
Unfortunately buggies were not allowed which meant that a few of our members could not play, but the 30 that did thoroughly enjoyed the event.

Club Charity Xmas Night – Weds. 21st December
We are pleased to report that the event raised over £600 for the club charities.
To achieve the necessary ticket sales we had to make it more of an overall club event rather than just a Senior’s one.
Here’s a posting Derek Bryant the Senior’s Captain made on the SVGC facebook site shortly after:
Sincere thanks:
To everyone who supported the Club Xmas Charity Night last week.
Terry Cole our entertainer who did an excellent job keeping the music and dancing going.
Andy Carter our M.C. for the evening and for being Andy Carter!
Members of our Senior Committee taking the bets – Rob Cook, Alan Gregg, Barry Jenkins and Mike Newell
Alison Powlesland our Ladies Captain for adjudicating on some very close race finishes and organising the raffle.
Our race sponsors: A1 Lofts – Connor Wilkins, Mark Sanders and Darren Thorne, Mike Newell, Sunday League, Scotty Gates – Simon Scott, and C-Team Supreme – Keith Parker.
All those that bought individual race runners.
Everyone who donated prizes for the raffle – there seemed to be more prizes than raffle tickets!!
Ryan and his team for making sure we didn’t go thirsty and Debbie for the excellent buffet.
I’m pleased to report we raised £623 towards the Club Charities – Darren’s Bristol and Beyond Asbestos Family Support, Alison’s and the Senior’s Great Western Air Ambulance Charities

Captains Cup  – 12 October 2016

Congratulations to Ian Haddon on winning the trophy on a course where the pin positions were very tricky, with a commendable 38 points.

Partnered by Malcolm Gray and Derek Bryant, Ian started well with a birdie 3 points on the first and was unlucky to lip out on the second for a par. 21 points on the front 9, coupled with 17 points on the back 9 made Ian the winner by one point over  Dennis Foster and Albert Charlton

Seniors Mini Break – 14/15 Aug 2016
The excellent parkland course at Puckrup Hall Golf Club is proof that a course does not have to measure in excess of 6000 odd yards in order to leave you breathless because this one will leaving you positively gasping. In the best possible way, of course, as the stunning setting alone for it is enough to leave you needing to catch your breath.
From here, you can enjoy majestic views of the surrounding countryside and plenty of green, luxurious looking countryside also.
On the course, you can rest assured you are going to be presented with a whole host of challenges that virtually beg you to take them on. Display some good course management, sound club selection and you could score well.

Seniors Club Championships 2016
On a very wet and windy first day scoring was unusually high but not unexpected. Leaders at the end of the day was Malcolm (Bill) Smith 88, followed by the big guns in Tony Brogden 89 and Brian Cluterbuck 89.
17 players qualified for day 2 which was a complete contrast to the first day with no rain and very little wind. Scoring, as expected, was lower with only Richard Bull playing below his handicap shooting a gross 85. Guy Norfolk shot an 82 to take the clubhouse lead until Peter Mumford shot the best round of the day with a 79 to become seniors champion for 2016.
Results:
Champion Peter Mumford 91 + 79 170

Captain’s comment:
On a very muggy hot day SVGC Seniors defeated Thornbury 6 – 1 in a match where old acquaintances were renewed. Derek Bryant playing against an old football team mate and Mike Newell reliving life in the civil service nearly 30 years ago with an ex colleague. Dave Christopher was making a final guest appearance for the team, also playing against an old acquaintance – 7 June 2016
Peter Mumford, equipped with a new set of Titleist irons bought from the Colonel’s Cabin, had a hole in one on the 4th – 20 Apr 2016. Playing in the Wednesday competition, he shot a very commendable 39 points playing off 8. His tee shot pitched a foot away from the hole and popped in. His good form continued in the next Weds. comp. where he shot the lowest gross score despite going out of bounds on the 17th!
Rob Payne continued his excellent form lately with a win against Peter Cheesley in the Winter Knockout 2015/16 singles final.
The 2015/16 Doubles final was even closer with Malcom Gray & Andy Pillinger beating Martin Walters & Phil Norris by one
