Seniors Open – Wednesday 8th May 2019

The ‘golfing gods’ were obviously on our side today. The weather forecast did not look good, fortunately the rain stayed away for most of the morning and during the afternoon lightning storms seemed to go either side of the course, much to Martin Edenboroughs relief, and we missed the hail and torrential rain that affected many parts of Bristol and the surrounding areas.
That said 98 players set off on their quest to become Senior Open Champions, an increase of 20+ over last year. (120+ players had originally registered but 20 had to pull out due to unforeseen circumstances).
The course as always was in great condition with many visiting players commenting on the course and how much they had enjoyed playing it. Congratulations must go to Steve Francombe and his team of greenkeepers for the dedication and hard work they put in all throughout the year.
Andrea Jordan and a team of ladies did a tremendous job with the registration process, including the organisation of the two’s pot, and selling and drawing of the raffle tickets. A big help to myself and the Seniors Committee so a very big thankyou to all those concerned.

Thank you Jerry Baker who acted as starter for the day.

A big thankyou also to Martin Edenborough and his staff for their help in ensuring the smooth organisation and running of this event.
Thanks also to Ryan Thomas and the catering team for keeping us fed and watered.

Thank you to all those who took part, donated raffle prizes, bought raffle tickets, entered the two’s pot and donated to Antony Nolan by purchasing lapel badges.

Finally I would like to thank the Seniors Committee for their help and support during the organisation of the Seniors Open in particular to Terry Edenbotough who raised a total of £600 in hole sponsorship from; Responsible Life, Adventure Bristol, Beauty Belle, Marios, Vince Hayward, Jerry Baker, Peter Mumford and the Seniors Committee.

Thank you all for helping to raise £1067.61 for my nominated charity

Barry Jenkins
Seniors Captain

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Martin Edenborough and Ian Hadden for keeping us all informed with the scoring, Steve Francombe and his staff for the great condition the course is in, Ryan Thomas and his catering staff, Mike Shepherd and Pete Smith as our starters and all Seniors who donated prizes for the raffle and all committee members who helped to make this successful day possible, last but not least all the players who turned up to make it such a memorable day, I thank you all.

Regards

Bob Cook

Peter Cheesley’s report AGM 2017
Stockwood Vale Golf Club Seniors Open 9 May 2017.

The format for this event was Stableford four ball better ball played in pairs. The change was introduced 2015 in attempt to increase the number of players for the event. In previous years the format was an individual qualifying stableford. It was noticed that the number of players entering the Seniors Open was going down. This decrease in players was not unique to Stockwood. It was occurring in other golf clubs in the region. To try an increase the number of players the four ball better ball Stableford was chosen as the format for 2015.
The total number of players was 100 for 2015 and 120 for 2016. In 2017 the total number of players was 76 players.
It was comprised of 48 Stockwood Vale members (24 teams) and 28 players from other clubs (14 teams). This was a decrease of 44 players from the previous year’s better ball Stableford. Hence the change to the new format for 2017 has not achieved is its objective of increasing the number of players. The reduction of Stockwood Vale teams was 13 teams and away teams the reduction was 9 teams. Other golf clubs in the region are having the same issue with decreasing entrants.
On the day the following golf clubs had members playing, Broome Manor, Chipping Sodbury, Filton, Brickhampton, Taunton and Pickeridge, Broome Manor, Bath, Enmore, Wells and The Players.
It was a fine day and the course played well. Even though the play was slow at times the golfers enjoyed the day. The overall winners came from, G. Dyer (Wells) and M. Gibbon (Stockwood) AGAIN. Prizes were given to the first four places for home and visitors.
Prizes were also given for nearest the pin (four holes) and the longest drive.
The raffle and the Seniors Open in combination raised in the region of £600 for the Seniors Captain Charity (Great Western Air Ambulance Charity). The Stockwood Vale members were very generous in the amount of prizes donated for the charity and are thanked for the various amounts of different wines donated to the good cause. Also a great thanks to Martin Edenborough and the green staff of Stockwood Vale Golf Club. Also to Ryan and the catering staff for their support during the event. Many thanks to Trevor and Wally as the starters for the day. Also to all the club members who played on the day and to those who gave prizes for the raffle. And the Open committee in their support of the Open.
The mode of application for the Open was via the Stockwood Vale mail shot and the web page Golf Empire. This will be continued for next year. Home players as usual via the notice board.
This will be my last year as the organiser for the Seniors Open.
At present no members have come forward to take on the role for organising next year’s Open. Some Golf Clubs in the region have stopped having Senior Opens. If we cannot find members to take on the organisation of our Open, then we could find ourselves in the same position.
Also, do we need to consider the format for the Open again. The choice is yours.

I would like to thank all members and staff who have assisted me in the last three years in running the Stockwood Vale Seniors Open.
Peter Cheesley.

Seniors Open Report at the AGM – Peter Cheesley reported the following:
Stockwood Vale Golf Club Seniors Open 10 May 2016.
The format for this event was Stableford four ball better ball played in pairs. The change was introduced in attempt to increase the number of players for the event. In previous years the format was an individual qualifying stableford. It was noticed that the number of players entering the Seniors Open was going down. This decrease in players was not unique to Stockwood. It was occurring in other golf clubs in the region. To try to increase the number of players the four ball better ball Stableford was chosen as the format for 2015. The total number of players was 120 for 2016. It was comprised of 74 Stockwood Vale members (37 teams) and 46 players from other clubs (23 teams). This was an increase of approximately 20 players from the previous year’s better ball Stableford. Hence the change to the new format is still achieving its objective of increasing the number of players. However time will tell. Other golf clubs in the region are having the same issue with decreasing entrants. On the day the following golf clubs had members playing, Saltford, Kingsdown, Broome Manor, Chipping Sodbury, Thornbury, Knowle, Oxford City, Chippenham, Tiverton, Oake Manor, Mendip Springs, Brickhampton Court, Cumberwell Park, Long Sutton, Filton, Woodspring, Clevedon, Kendleshire Bath, Minchehampton, Enmore and The Players. It was a fine day and the course played well. Even though the play was slow at times the golfers enjoyed the day. The overall winners came from Stockwood Vale, G.Dyer and M.Gibbon. Prizes were given to the first four places for home and visitors. Prizes were also given for nearest the pin (four holes) and the longest drive. The raffle and the Seniors Open in combination raised in the region of £600 for the Seniors Captain Charity (South West Children’s Hospice). Many thanks to Lyndon as the starter for the day. Also to all the club members who played on the day and to those who prizes for the raffle. And the Open committee in their support of the Open. The mode of application for the Open was via the Stockwood Vale mail shot and the web page Golf Empire. This will be continued for next year. For next year (9 May) the tee times will be 10 mins apart in an attempt to speed up play. The start time will be 08:30. The main prize will be at least £100. It will be a maximum handicap of 24 with a 90% allowance.

Seniors Open  – Tuesday 10 May 2016 – Mike Newell – Seniors Captain
The Seniors committee would like to thank all the players, both SVGC members and visitors from far and wide, for participating in the Stockwood Vale Seniors Open this year.
The weather could have been kinder, in as much it rained almost constantly all day with the final few groups being caught in a tremendous downpour which made the playing conditions almost impossible.
Thank you for supporting the raffle which was in aid of The Children’s Hospice South West. The funds raised through the Open amounted to £658.50, this money will be added to the charity fund and presented to Olly Slym from CHSW at beginning of November.
The scoring was very good with the top three groups all scoring 44 pts.
We would like to put on record our thanks to people who helped make the day a successful one:
Steve Francome and his greenstaff for preparing the course.
Ryan Thomas and his staff for feeding and watering us.
Lyndon Cheal for acting as starter for the day.
Mrs Julie Fry for helping on the reception desk and organising the raffle tickets.
Seniors Committee members for their help on the day.
Martin Edenborough and club management staff for their organisation.
Members of the golf club who donated raffle prizes.
And finally,
Peter Cheeseley, our Open Secretary for his dedication and organisation of the Open.
